Recruitment

  • eligible candidate - has a CV that shows the "right" paper qualification and experience
  • suitable candidate - can actually do the job well.

Try to avoid hiring eligible candidate who is not suitable. Suitable candidates who are not officially eligible tend to turn out to be the best choice.

Organising teams

Team lifecycle (following B.W.Tuckman and M.A.Jensen):

  • forming - getting to know each other, setting up some ground rules about behaviour and code of conduct
  • storming - conflicts, group's methods of operation are being tested and established
  • norming - conflicts are largely settled, group identity emerges
  • performing - emphasis on tasks at hand
  • adjuring - the group disbands

The best mix of personalities in a team, following Meredith Belbin:

  • coordinator - good at running meetings, being calm, strong but tolerant
  • idea-generator - good at generating ideas, potential solutions to problems
  • monitor-evaluator - good at evaluating ideas and potential solutions and helping to select the best one
  • shaper - a worrier, skeptic, who helps to direct the team's attention to the important issues
  • implementer - skilled at creating a good working environment
  • resource investigator: adept at finding resources in terms of both physical and information
  • completer-finisher - concerned with completing tasks and finishing stage of projects
  • company-worker - a good team player who is willing to undertake less attractive tasks if they are needed or necessary for team success.
